Witch Hazel Hydrosol

Witch Hazel Hydrosol is the aromatic water drawn off when the twigs, bark and leaves of Hamamelis virginiana are steam-distilled. Unlike most of the plant waters in this range, witch hazel is a genuine, recognised cosmetic astringent — which is exactly what makes it such a good toner. It is a bark-and-twig water, not a floral one, with a mild, fresh, herbal, slightly woody scent. Its real strength is what it does not contain.

Most witch hazel on the market is the pharmacy kind, cut with alcohol; this hydrosol is the distilled water on its own, with no alcohol added — which is why it can tone and clarify oily or sensitive skin without drying it out. It is water-based, so we keep it fresh with sodium benzoate at up to 1.5% and say so on the label. Witch hazel is a North American shrub rather than an Indian crop, so we are straight about sourcing: we bring in the botanical from its native range and supply the hydrosol in bulk from India, each batch shipped with its own COA, SDS and TDS, and the INCI, CAS, preservative and pH all documented.
