Willow Bark Liquid Extract

Willow bark is a classic toner botanical, and astringent is one of its recognised cosmetic roles. Swept over skin on a cotton pad, a toner made with the water-soluble version leaves the surface feeling tightened and fresh rather than tight and stripped. Skin looks smoother and less shiny, and pores read as finer in the mirror.

There is no oil in the water-soluble version, so a shampoo, scalp tonic or leave-in mist made with it rinses away completely and leaves nothing behind. The scalp feels clean and comfortable instead of coated, hair keeps its body at the roots, and a fresh wash still looks fresh by evening rather than flattening.

The oil-soluble version arrives in an oil base, and that base is most of what goes into your formula. Warmed between the fingertips it melts and spreads easily, sinking in without leaving a heavy film behind. A balm, salve or body butter made with it leaves skin feeling soft, smooth and cushioned rather than coated.

Smoothed sparingly over dry ends, or worked through the lengths before a wash, the oil-soluble version adds slip exactly where hair needs it most. Ends look smoother and less frayed, flyaway strands sit down, and the light catches a clear shine along the length. It suits the pre-wash oiling routine your customers already keep.

This is what the water-soluble version is made for, and where willow bark has always sold best. It disperses into toners, essences, facial mists, clear gels, water-based serums and sheet-mask essence without clouding them, because it is colourless and water-based itself. It is the obvious botanical for a clarifying or mattifying range.

For shampoos, conditioners, scalp tonics, hair rinses and leave-in mists, use the water-soluble version, which blends into water-based systems and leaves hair light. For pre-wash hair oils and serums for the ends, use the oil-soluble version. Both belong in one hair range; they simply do different jobs at different points in the wash.

A cream or lotion has both a water phase and an oil phase, so either version works – you add it to the phase it belongs in. Water-soluble goes into the water phase, oil-soluble into the oil phase or at cool-down. Face creams, hand creams, body lotions and moisturising milks all take it comfortably.

The oil-soluble version blends into anything with no water in it: balms, salves, body butters, cleansing oils, massage blends and oil-based scrubs. It stirs into other oils at room temperature and stays put, needing no heat. In cold-process soap, add it at trace, where it behaves like any other oil in the recipe.
