Nagarmotha Hydrosol

Nagarmotha Hydrosol is the root water of Cyperus scariosus – the sedge whose dried roots and rhizomes give nagarmotha, or cypriol, one of India's most prized perfumery materials. Steam-distil those roots and the water that comes off carries their unmistakable scent: earthy and woody, with a smoky, spicy, faintly leathery depth. It is a root water, not a floral one, and a world away from a light fruit or flower hydrosol.

That scent is the point of it. On skin it is a light, mildly astringent toning water with a distinctive aroma; in a formula it is a way to thread real nagarmotha through a perfume, a men's grooming line or a hair range. It is water-based, so we keep it fresh with sodium benzoate at up to 1.5% and say so on the label. We distil the roots here in India and ship the hydrosol in bulk. Every batch leaves with its paperwork – COA, SDS and TDS – so the INCI, the CAS, the preservative and the measured pH are all on record and match what is in the drum.

Perfume Industry

Nagarmotha is a base note, and the hydrosol lends that woody, earthy character to fine sprays without the punch of the oil. Blend it into an alcohol- or water-based cologne or body spray as the water part, where it sits happily beside vetiver, patchouli, sandalwood and cedarwood. For a deeper, lasting trail, add a little cypriol oil.

We run the still, not just the label. Nagarmotha is Indian to its core, and we distil the roots into hydrosol at our own works, in bulk — rather than buying a ready-made water and putting our name on it. The people who made your drum are the people you talk to, and each one carries a batch number back to the day it was distilled.

The preservative is on the label. Any water needs protecting from spoilage; ours does that with sodium benzoate at up to 1.5%, and we print it plainly. We think a stated preservative beats the fiction of a water that somehow keeps itself.

The scent is distilled, not dosed in. What you smell in the bottle is nagarmotha root off the still, not a fragrance made to imitate it. Should a formula want a heavier, longer woody trail, we will steer you to cypriol oil to build on — and we will always say where a scent has come from.
