Marigold Hydrosol

Marigold Hydrosol is the flower water of Calendula officinalis — the pot marigold used in skincare, not the Tagetes "genda" grown for garlands. Steam-distill the fresh flowers and the water that comes off carries a soft, fresh, floral-herbal scent and the gentle character calendula is known for. It is a true floral water — almost entirely water, ready to go straight onto skin or into a formula.

What sets it apart is how mild it is. It is a light, gently acidic cosmetic water — a hydrating, toning floral water that suits everyday, minimal skincare and skin that finds stronger toners too much. Being water-based, it is kept fresh with sodium benzoate at up to 1.5%, stated on the label rather than hidden. We distil the calendula flowers here in India and ship the hydrosol in bulk. Is this the same marigold as genda?

No. Genda is Tagetes, the marigold grown for garlands; this is Calendula officinalis, the pot marigold used in skincare. Different plant, different water.

Is it really a floral water?

Yes — and correctly so. Marigold is a flower, so its hydrosol is a true floral water, distilled from calendula blossoms. It is a water, not the oil.

Do I dilute it, or use it neat?

Neat. It already is a dilute water, so you can sweep it on as a toner, spritz it as a mist, or fold it into a formula's water phase just as it comes.

What keeps it fresh?

Sodium benzoate, at up to 1.5%. A water needs a preservative to hold; kept cool, dark, and sealed, marigold water keeps for about a year.

Is it gentle enough for delicate skin?
