Lime Fragrance Oil

The scent is sharp, green and unmistakably lime – the zest rather than the juice, bright at the top and clean underneath. It reads as fresh immediately rather than building slowly, which is why it works both as the opening note of a blend and as the whole story in a simple product.

In a soap, a body wash or a lotion, it leaves skin smelling sharply fresh rather than perfumed. Unlike a natural citrus it will not turn or go sour as the product ages on a shelf, so the last bottle in a batch smells exactly the same as the first one did.

Added to a shampoo or conditioner, lime leaves hair smelling clean without any sweetness at all. It cuts the flat smell that builds up between washes, and because it is compounded rather than pressed, it survives a surfactant base far better than a natural citrus oil manages. No sourness as it ages.

This is where a fragrance oil earns its place. It survives the heat of a candle pour, the alkalinity of cold-process soap and the surfactants in a body wash, so the scent your customer smells on the very last use is the one you blended at the start. That is the whole point.

Cold process, hot process and melt-and-pour all take lime well. Add at trace to prevent acceleration, and it will hold its brightness through saponification, where a natural citrus thins away to almost nothing over the first few weeks of the cure. Run a small test batch first to check for discolouration.

Soy, paraffin and beeswax all carry it evenly. Add at your fragrance load and stir gently for a consistent throw and a clean burn. The sharp lime note works alone or lifts a herbal or floral blend, and it suits a summer or kitchen range particularly well. The throw stays even throughout.

Room sprays, reed diffusers and air fresheners all use lime for a bright citrus cut. It is not water-soluble, so blend with alcohol or use a solubiliser such as polysorbate 20 at ten to fifteen per cent of oil weight for a clear, stable spray. Shake before each use if you are unsure.

Lime works as a top note in colognes and fresh unisex accords, lifting floral and woody hearts and pairing naturally with musk or amber bases. In lotions, add at the emulsification stage for even distribution. It pairs particularly well with bergamot and lavender.
