Karanj Oil
Karanj Oil
Karanj oil – also called Pongamia or Indian beech oil – is one of India's genuinely dual-purpose botanical oils. It's cold-pressed from the seeds of Pongamia pinnata, a hardy tree native to South and Southeast Asia, and what sets it apart from most carrier oils is its rich content of natural flavonoids – karanjin and pongamol – alongside its fatty acids.
That flavonoid content gives it a potent, characterful nature and a distinctive, strong, slightly bitter aroma. In personal care, it has a long traditional role in Indian skin and scalp oils – typically used in blends, diluted with a lighter carrier like coconut, rather than neat. With a comedogenic rating of 2, it stays reasonably lightweight for a potent oil. Beyond cosmetics, karanj has a genuine second life as a traditional agricultural raw material and a well-studied biodiesel feedstock. Supplied from 500 ML to 35 KG, with COA, MSDS, and TDS, from Raasa Oils – for external use.
