Gotu Kola Oil

Gotu Kola Oil

Gotu Kola Oil is Centella asiatica in an oil you can formulate with. The plant is a low, creeping herb of damp and shaded ground that grows across India and that Ayurvedic practice knows as mandukaparni. Its leaves are steeped in a fixed carrier oil until the oil takes on their green cast, their quiet earthy smell and their oil-soluble fraction, and the spent leaf is then filtered away.

It is an infusion rather than an essential oil, and there is a good reason nobody sells you the alternative. Distilling the fresh plant yields around three hundredths of one per cent, so a single litre of true gotu kola essential oil would take more than three tonnes of leaf. Infusion is how this herb reaches an oil phase in a form a formulator can build a product around. We macerate it here in India, in sesame seed oil, and supply it from a first sample bottle to a production run, with a certificate of analysis for every batch.

Gotu Kola Oil Benefits

Softens Dry Skin

Gotu Kola Oil is an emollient, which is the plain cosmetic word for something that works on the surface rather than underneath. It settles into the gaps between the flakes of partly shed skin that make a dry patch feel rough. On heels, elbows, shins and hands, you can feel the difference under your fingers within a minute of putting it on.

Skin Feels Conditioned

Skin conditioning is the cosmetic function the European Commission's ingredient database assigns to Centella asiatica leaf extract, and it is the claim this oil is entitled to make. It describes how skin looks and feels after use rather than anything happening beneath it, which is exactly the line a cosmetic is allowed to stand on.

Smooths Dry Hair

Oiling hair before a wash is older in India than any product on this page, and gotu kola has long been one of the herbs put into the oil. Work published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science measured oil-treated hair instead of describing it, recording lower combing force both wet and dry, and higher gloss. Smoother hair, on an instrument.

Smooth Massage

An infused fixed oil spreads and stays where it is put, which is what a long massage needs and what a lotion cannot do. Gotu Kola Oil gives hands enough slip to keep moving without dragging, and enough body that it has not disappeared a minute later. On dry skin after a bath, that is the whole difference.

Gotu Kola Oil Uses

Skincare Products

Gotu Kola Oil goes in as the whole oil phase of an anhydrous balm, body oil or facial oil, or as part of the oil phase in a cream. It is medium-weight, so it suits dry-skin and night formats better than gel-light day products. Inclusion runs from a few per cent of an emulsion up to the full hundred.

Hair Care Products

Gotu kola has been going into Indian hair oil for a very long time, and this is the format your buyers reach for first: pre-wash oils, scalp treatments, masks and leave-in serums. The oil has enough weight to stay on the hair through a soak instead of flashing off. In a leave-in, keep the level low or hair reads greasy.

Bath Products

This is the strongest fit on the list. Gotu kola belongs to the Indian body- and scalp-oiling tradition, so an infused massage oil carries a story a buyer already recognises, with a real herb behind it rather than a fragrance. It also suits bath and body oils and melt-and-pour bases. Cold-process soap destroys most of what the infusion put there.

Cosmetic Products

Treat Gotu Kola Oil as a fixed oil. It joins the oil phase with your other fixed oils before emulsification, needs no solubiliser in anhydrous work and a proper emulsifier for anything water-based. It carries a light greenish colour and a mild herbal odour into the finished product, and it puts two names on your ingredient list rather than one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barely. Distilling the fresh plant yields around three hundredths of one per cent, so a litre would take over three tonnes of leaf, which is why an infusion is the practical product.

A fixed carrier oil: sesame seed oil, pressed from Sesamum indicum. Sesame is a declared allergen in the United States and the European Union, so check your own labelling rules.

Not always. In India, brahmi names both Centella asiatica, which is what this oil is made from, and Bacopa monnieri, which is a different plant entirely.

No, Asiaticoside and madecassoside are water-soluble saponins, and an oil infusion carries the oil-soluble fraction, so anyone needing a guaranteed figure should buy a standardised powder instead.

Anywhere from a few per cent of an emulsion's oil phase up to the whole oil phase of an anhydrous balm or body oil. Start where your current carrier oil sits.

Yes, take a small pack, run it through your own formulation and stability testing, and move up to drums once you are satisfied it behaves the way you need.
