Cashew Nut Oil

Cashew Nut Oil

Cashew Nut Oil is a golden, mild-smelling carrier oil cold-pressed from cashew kernels, Anacardium occidentale. It is rich in oleic acid – the same fatty acid that dominates olive and almond oil – which makes it a cushioning emollient that suits dry and normal skin and keeps better than the lighter, high-linoleic oils that turn rancid faster. It carries little colour and only a mild, nutty note into a formula.

One thing to say plainly, because the old page never did: this is a cashew product. Cashew is a tree nut and a declared allergen, so anyone with a nut allergy should treat it as they would any cashew, and it must be declared on the label of anything made with it. We press and supply it here in India, where cashew is grown, so it is one oil we genuinely make here rather than import. We supply it from a first sample bottle to a production run, with a certificate of analysis for every batch.

Cashew Nut Oil Benefits

Softer Skin

Skin conditioning is the cosmetic function the European Commission's ingredient database assigns to cashew nut oil, and softening is what an emollient does. Together they leave skin feeling softer and smoother after use – a plain description of how skin looks and feels, not a claim about anything happening beneath the surface, which is the line a cosmetic is allowed to stand on.

Longer-Lasting

Cashew nut oil is rich in oleic acid, the fatty acid that makes an emollient feel rich rather than thin. Worked into the skin, it forms a light layer that helps skin hold on to its own moisture, so the soft feeling lasts longer through the day rather than tightening an hour later. Dry skin is where you notice it most.

Smooths Rough Skin

An emollient works on the surface of the skin, settling into the gaps between the flakes of partly shed skin that make a dry patch feel rough. Cashew nut oil does that where it is needed most – heels, elbows and knuckles – so rough, dry skin feels smoother under your fingers within a minute of putting it on.

Shinier Hair

Work published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science measured oil-treated hair rather than describing it, recording lower combing force both wet and dry and higher gloss. Cashew nut oil leaves hair smoother to comb and glossier to look at on the same principle – a fixed-oil property, not a claim to make hair grow or to make it stronger.

Cashew Nut Oil Uses

Skincare Products

Cashew nut oil goes into the oil phase of lotions, creams, balms and serums, and being oleic-rich, it is a cushioning, richer emollient than the light linoleic oils, which suits dry skin and night formats. It carries little colour and only a mild, nutty smell into a formula. Its high oleic content also makes it slower to oxidise, so it holds up well on the shelf.

Hair Care Products

Cashew nut oil suits conditioners, masks, serums and scalp oils, where it adds slip and leaves hair smoother and glossier without a strengthening or growth claim behind it. It has a moderate weight – richer than a light oil, lighter than a butter – so keep the level modest in a leave-on, or fine hair will read greasy.

Soap Making

In soap, an oleic-rich oil like cashew behaves much as olive does: it builds a mild, conditioning bar that is kind to skin, though soap makers usually balance it with a harder oil for a firmer finish. It also works in bath oils, body blends and melt-and-pour bases, adding a conditioning feel without a heavy film.

Cosmetic Products

Treat it as an oleic-rich fixed oil. It joins the oil phase with your other oils before emulsification, needs no solubiliser in anhydrous work and a proper emulsifier for anything water-based, and its high oleic content makes it more oxidation-stable than a linoleic oil, needing less antioxidant. One point to plan for: it puts a declared tree-nut allergen on your finished label.
