Bitter Orange Essential Oil

In a diffuser it fills a room with a clean, sharp citrus that cuts straight through cooking smells and stale air. It is the scent of peel rather than juice – brighter and drier than sweet orange – and it lifts a kitchen or a workspace within a minute or two of switching on.

Soaps, bath oils, shower gels and body scrubs all use bitter orange for a bright, clean citrus character. Citrus notes fade faster than most through a cold-process cure, so pair it with a fixative such as litsea, benzoin or a woody base if you need the scent to survive intact.
