Birch Hydrosol

Birch Hydrosol is the aromatic water that runs off when birch leaves and twigs (Betula alba) are steam-distilled. Birch distils readily, so this is a real hydrosol – a genuine aromatic water, not a flavoured one. It comes from leaves and twigs rather than flowers, which makes it a leaf water, not a floral one, whatever the old label said. The scent is birch's own: fresh and woody with a faint minty lift, clean and brisk rather than sweet.

On skin it behaves as a light, mildly astringent toning water that suits oily and combination types, and it has long been a favourite for the hair and scalp too. Because it is water-based, we preserve it with sodium benzoate (up to 1.5%), and that goes on the label, not into the small print. Two honest notes.
