Safflower Oil

Safflower Oil

Safflower Oil is pressed from the seeds of Carthamus tinctorius, the thistle-like crop Indian farmers grow as kardi and an older English trade called false saffron. The seed gives a pale yellow oil with a faint, almost neutral smell, light enough to work into a facial formula and steady enough to sit in a body oil or a hair oil.

One thing about safflower matters more than anything else on this page, and most suppliers never mention it. Safflower is sold in two grades that are chemical opposites: an ordinary type built mostly on linoleic acid, and a high-oleic type built mostly on oleic acid. They behave differently in a formula, and they keep differently on a shelf. The fatty acid profile of each batch is listed on its Certificate of Analysis (COA). We press and supply it in India, from a first sample bottle up to a production run, with a certificate of analysis for every batch.

Safflower Oil Benefits

Softens Dry Skin

Safflower Oil is an emollient, which is the plain cosmetic word for something that works on the surface of the skin rather than underneath it. It settles into the gaps between the part-shed flakes that make a dry patch feel rough, and smooths them down. On heels, elbows, shins and hands, you can feel the difference within a minute of putting it on.

Skin Feels Conditioned

Skin conditioning is the cosmetic function that every ingredient database we checked assigns to Carthamus tinctorius seed oil, and it is the claim this oil is entitled to make. It describes how skin looks and feels after use rather than anything happening beneath the surface, which is exactly the line a cosmetic product is allowed to stand on.

Smooths Dry Hair

Oiling hair before a wash is older in India than any product on this page. Work published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science measured oil-treated hair rather than describing it, recording lower combing force both wet and dry, and higher gloss. Safflower is one of the lighter carrier oils, so it does that job without weighing hair down.

Smooth Massage

A pressed fixed oil spreads and stays where it is put, which is what a long massage needs and what a lotion cannot do. Safflower Oil gives hands enough slip to keep moving without dragging, and it is light enough that it sinks in afterwards rather than sitting on the skin for the rest of the evening.

Safflower Oil Uses

Skincare Products

Goes into the oil phase of face oils, serums, lotions, creams and balms as an emollient and skin-conditioning ingredient. It is one of the lighter fixed oils, with a faint odour that does not clash with a fragrance, so it works where a heavier base would feel greasy or where the finished product has to smell of what you added.

Hair Care Products

Used in pre-wash oils, leave-in serums, masks and rinse-off conditioners as a hair-conditioning ingredient. In a rinse-off conditioner, it sits in the oil phase at a low percentage; in a pre-wash treatment, it can be most of the formula. Its light weight is the reason to choose it over a heavier oil on fine or limp hair.

Bath Products

A workable base for massage blends, bath oils, body oils, scrubs and after-shower products. It spreads far, stays workable for a long treatment and absorbs without leaving a heavy film, which is what a therapist notices first. It also dissolves essential oils cleanly, so a blend stays even in the bottle rather than separating on the shelf.

Cosmetic Products

It enhances the spreadability of a formula and carries oil-soluble actives evenly through it. In an emulsion, it belongs in the oil phase with the other fixed oils, before emulsification; in an anhydrous serum, balm or bath oil it needs no solubiliser at all. It tolerates normal batch warming, does not shift viscosity sharply, and declares as Carthamus Tinctorius Seed Oil.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is cold-pressed. Refined safflower is paler and lower in odour, which most cosmetic manufacturers prefer; unrefined carries more colour and a seedy smell.

It is a light oil that absorbs quickly and does not leave a heavy film. Comedogenicity ratings come from an animal assay that its own field no longer trusts, so we do not quote one.

No, Kusum oil is pressed from Schleichera oleosa, a completely different plant, though the names get confused in Indian trade usage. This is Carthamus tinctorius, sold in India as kardi and known as false saffron.

Two years from manufacture, unopened, and noticeably less once air is in the container. Decant into smaller bottles rather than opening a drum repeatedly, and keep it cool, dark and tightly sealed.

Yes, take a 100 ML or 500 ML pack, run it in your formula, then scale to 1, 5 or 10 KG of the same oil once you are satisfied it behaves as you need.
